Markdown Buddy app
The Markdown Buddy macOS app has no account, no analytics and no advertising, and the publisher runs no server that receives your documents. By default, everything is processed on your Mac: Markdown rendering, search, and the project overview written by Apple Intelligence on device.
Apart from the case below, the app contacts no server on its own. One case deserves a precise answer: if a document references an image by a remote address, the renderer downloads that image, exactly as a web browser would, and the server hosting it therefore sees a request. Preferences let you turn this off. The Quick Look preview, shown when you press the space bar in the Finder, never loads remote images.
AI providers, with your own key
If you choose Claude (Anthropic) or ChatGPT (OpenAI) as the writing engine for a project overview, the app sends the text of that project's Markdown documents directly from your Mac to that provider, using the API key you entered. Nothing is sent before you give your consent for that project, and you can withdraw it at any time. Keys are stored in your macOS keychain only. The publisher never sees your keys, your documents or the result: the request goes from your Mac to the provider, and is governed by your agreement with that provider and its privacy policy. If you choose a local server such as Ollama, oMLX or LM Studio, the text goes to the address you set: on this Mac (localhost), nothing leaves the machine; at another address, the app asks for your consent as for a provider. The app keeps a local log of what was sent, which you can view in Settings.
AI agents on your Mac (MCP)
The MCP relay, which lets an AI agent running on your Mac read the projects you choose, is off by default and works only on your Mac: the app opens no network port. What the agent then does with what it reads depends on that agent.
